The Ohio State Cleveland neighbourhood of Glenville was founded in 1870 as an independent village, but has now been subsumed into Cleveland. In a wealthy area of Cleveland, viewed predominantly as a Jewish area, the village was home to the Glenville Racetrack, universally known as the Golden Oval, which staged harness races on an 87 acre site near St Clair's. The track was built in 1870 by the Cleveland Driving Park Company, and became an integral part of the Northern Ohio Fair. By 1881 the Fairground was not being used, although harness racing and trotting continued until 1908. While betting took place on some of the races, the Gentleman's Driving Club were keen to promote their sport without the need for gambling. By 1908 the mayor made gambling illegal and this speeded up the demise of the track. |
